HEAD to HEAD [ the Part of Guido ] - [5/6]

George Clooney, Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem and Antonio Banderas were considered as possible Guido. Banderas turned down the chance to reprise his role as Guido in the film version and Bardem was cast to star as Guido Contini but dropped out due to exhaustion. He decided to take a full year off to recuperate. Daniel Day Lewis was cast instead.

The women of 'Nine' grace the cover of Vogue in the November issue. The movie-musical, directed by Rob Marshall, stars some of Hollywood's hottest leading ladies including Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson and Marion Cotillard along with Fergie, Sophia Loren and Judi Dench.

The director and its stars talk about the film, the expectations that come along with it and what it's like doing a musical.

Rob Marshall on the expectations: "This movie is not a remake of '8 ½!' I could never remake that movie in half a million years. I could never touch Fellini and the brilliant, genius masterpiece of all time."

Nicole Kidman on playing a movie icon: "I'm not playing Claudia Cardinale. Even when I played Virginia Woolf I didn't take the real woman into account."

Kidman on being a working mother: "I had no desire to work after I had my daughter, but to lure me back, this movie was the only way."

Kate Hudson on being in a musical: "I spent most of my childhood singing and dancing and just never had the chance to do it professionally. So when I got the chance to work with Rob, I was so excited, I was out of my mind"

Penelope Cruz on her roles: "Luckily I don't have to identify with my roles, because if I did I would be dead by now! I've been working since the age of seventeen, and I really haven't stopped. I want to balance it a little more. Instead of making three or four movies a year, I will do one."

Marion Cotillard on singing for the movie: "It's been my dream to do an American musical. When I was a child, 'Annie' was my favorite. I just never thought I would get to do it."

NINE moved to December

I just got word that The Weinstein Co. has officially moved Rob Marshall's musical Oscar contender Ninefrom its currently scheduled release date of November 29 to a limited release on December 18 in New York and Los Angeles and will then go wide on December 25.

The move only makes sense considering Weinstein/Dimension already had The Road hitting theaters on the 25th along with several other releases that have recently crowded the Thanksgiving holiday weekend schedule. Now it will serve as alternative programming on the 18th with Avatar before facing Sherlock Holmes on the 25th.

On top of this news A Single Man has been set for release on December 11 in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco and will also expand on Christmas Day.

8½ the beginning ...

8½ (pronounced Otto e mezzo in Italian) is a 1963 film directed by Italian director Federico Fellini. Co-scripted by Fellini, Tullio Pinelli, Ennio Flaiano, and Brunello Rondi, it stars Marcello Mastroianni as Guido Anselmi, a famous Italian film director

The movie's title refers to 8½ being Fellini's eighth and a half film as a director. His previous directorial work consisted of six features, two short segments, and a collaboration with another director, Alberto Lattuada, the latter three productions accounting for a "half" film each.

8½ won two Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Costume Design . Acknowledged as a highly influential classic, it was ranked 3rd best film of all time in a 2002 poll of film directors conducted by the British Film Institute.

8 1/2 is about Guido Anselmi, an Italian director who has lost all inspiration for his upcoming movie, and it's too late to back out. And aside from the fact that he can't make the film, his mistress, wife, producer, and all the rest of his friends, are pressuring him about one thing or another. So he retreats into his dreams to shelter himself from the pressure, and there, he finds inspiration to make his new film, and face the world.
